Course Description

Students will examine macroeconomic issues, including the determinants of output, interest rates, inflation, and employment/unemployment. The course will also cover discussions on fiscal and monetary policies, public debt, and various international economic issues. Macroeconomic principles will be illustrated using both European and American experiences.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define, calculate, and critique the limitations of key macroeconomic indicators such as GDP and inflation measured by the CPI.
  • Articulate the connection between savings and investment in both closed and open economies.
  • Evaluate the economic consequences of inflation.
  • Analyze the sequence of events leading to the 2008 financial crisis.
  • Examine the benefits and drawbacks of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan.
  • Engage in a rational discussion on arguments for and against raising the minimum wage.
  • Identify the causes and repercussions of unemployment.
  • Compare savings rates among nations, exploring the reasons and effects of divergent savings behaviors.
  • Construct arguments both for and against privatizing social security.
  • Evaluate the proposal to replace the federal income tax with a national sales tax.
  • Analyze economic growth rates and their determining factors.
  • Explain the role of money in the economy and assess the relationship between monetary policy and inflation.
