Course Description

B.Ed 181 Education and Society adopts a sociological perspective and situates the roles of teaching and schooling in society. This course helps students understand the broader context of schooling and its social and cultural impacts, with attention to equality and well-being. Through this course, students learn about the varying perspectives and theories on education and society, social processes and practices of and surrounding education, and inequalities and resistances, at a global level

Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically analyze the societal aspects of teaching and schooling.
  • Determine the influence of social class, race, gender, ethnicity, rurality, and economic and political structures, on schooling and teaching at a global level.
  • Adopt a sociological perspective in situating teaching and schooling in society.
  • Understand the societal determinants of safe yet stimulating learning environments.
