Course Description

This course focuses on legal issues that emerge in elementary and secondary schools in the United States. Through this course, students explore legal reasoning and analysis as well as examine a range of contemporary legal issues in school contexts. Topics covered in this course include lawmaking relative to public education, laws affecting curricula, students’ rights, laws addressing special learning needs, teachers’ Constitutional and statutory rights, safety in schools and employment laws for faculty and school staff.

  • Understand laws pertaining to the public school system, teachers, and students.
  • Analyze legal issues surrounding the rights and welfare of students and teachers.
  • Understand the legal considerations impacting a range of school policies.
  • Analyze the primary laws that protect students with disabilities.
