Course Description

This course explores the special learning needs of students with attention deficits (with or without hyperactivity), learning disabilities, developmental delays, behavior problems, dyslexia, autism, multiple disabilities, and other distinctive disorders. In this course, students learn about legislation and policy, educational theories, and teaching strategies applied to the classroom of such learners. Moreover, students learn about how to describe individual deficits and craft an educational plan that accommodates the said learners’ special needs. Other topics covered in this course are inclusive education, organization of schools for inclusive special education, working with parents of children in inclusive special education, and skills for collaborating with professionals and parents.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the history of special education, as well as legislation designed for special learning needs.
  • Understand the roles of the teacher and other educators within the parameters of regulations and developments.
  • Critically evaluate alternative teaching methods and strategies that provide adapted instruction for students with special needs.
  • Design instruction incorporating differentiations that characterize accommodations for learners with special needs.
  • Develop skills for crafting an educational plan for learners with special needs.
