Course Description

This course explores multicultural education by emphasizing the historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations of education, with attention to the role of multi-ethnicity in the history of the United States and its education system. This course teaches students about multicultural/multiethnic curricula, highlighting culturally- and linguistically responsive instruction and assessment approaches. (Formerly B.Ed 431 Introduction to Multicultural and Multiethnic Education).

Learning Outcomes:

Critically analyze the historical, philosophical, and sociocultural foundations of multicultural education.
Understand how social structures of race, ethnicity, class, gender, (dis)ability, and sexual orientation deny learning opportunities.
Assess how equity issues affect schooling and teaching.
Develop skills of the culturally competent teacher
