Course Description

This course explores multicultural education by emphasizing the historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations of education, with attention to the role of multi-ethnicity in the history of the United States and its education system. This course teaches students about multicultural/multiethnic curricula, highlighting culturally- and linguistically responsive instruction and assessment approaches. (Formerly B.Ed 431 Introduction to Multicultural and Multiethnic Education).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically analyze the historical, philosophical, and sociocultural foundations of multicultural education.
  • Understand how social structures of race, ethnicity, class, gender, (dis)ability, and sexual orientation deny learning opportunities.
  • Assess how equity issues affect schooling and teaching.
  • Develop skills of the culturally competent teacher
