Course Description

This course introduces students to race/ethnicity, class, immigrant status, and gender as theoretical concepts and their relation to health. The course emphasizes global and historical perspectives in analyzing how these factors are related to structural and societal constraints, narrowing health opportunities and choices for individuals. Students learn how these social factors influence people’s choices in creating health and healthcare utilization outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand race/ethnicity, class, immigrant status, and gender as theoretical concepts.
  • Apply these theoretical concepts to understanding societal and structural constraints influencing health choices.
  • Apply these theoretical concepts to understanding societal and structural constraints influencing access to health care.
  • Critically analyze a range of health issues from the perspectives of social class, race, gender, socioeconomic status, and immigrant status.
