Course Description

BHP 405 Sociology of Health Care introduces students to the various facets of health,
illness, medicine, and health care from a sociological perspective. Throughout the course,
sociological research emphasizes health-oriented sociological methods and thinking.
Students learn about sociological theories applied to health, health inequalities, health
and social relationships, health and disease, health care delivery, and the emergent issues
in these topics. (Formerly BHP 405 Sociology in Health Care).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Apply sociological theories to explain the social distribution of health, healthcare, and disease.
  • Understand disease and illness experiences using a variety of sociological theories.
  • Critically analyze sociological studies to emphasize health-oriented sociological methods and thinking.
  • Critically analyze some of the most important issues in the sociology of health care and review the current research in the field.
