Course Description

This course provides a fundamental background and genetics tools used in a laboratory or clinic. Students delve into genetic contributions to healthcare past and present, cell biology and genetics, testing technologies and applications, and clinical genetic services. The course covers ethical practice in clinical genetics, genetic determinants of behavioral disorders, and policy issues in clinical genetics and genomics.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand biochemical function tests used in diagnosing and monitoring response to therapy, prognosis, and screening.
  • Learn and discuss the role of clinical biochemistry in healthcare by linking clinical laboratory principles to patient care.
  • Critically analyze the clinical application of novel biomarkers in the context of relevant, current literature.
  • Critique the effectiveness and drawbacks of specific clinical laboratory test methodologies used to screen for, diagnose, and/or manage a given disease.
