Course Description

BSN 306 Introduction to Nursing Informatics introduces students to the use of technology to achieve safe, efficient, quality nursing care. This course emphasizes the nursing informatics (NI) role and the importance of the NI nurse working within interprofessional teams to address patient safety and quality by deploying successful health information technology (HIT) implementation. The topics covered in this course are organized into major themes: patient safety and quality nursing care, point-of-care applications, data management, and analytics, with emphasis on the interprofessional team. (Formerly BHS 306: Health Information Management)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Critically analyze the evolving roles and competencies of NI practice.
  • Understand how nursing, computer, and information science serve as sound foundations for NI.
  • Learn and discuss the NI role within interprofessional teams to address patient safety and health care quality.
