Course Description

This course explores the biochemical basis of various human diseases, emphasizing the selection and interpretation of biochemical diagnostic tests. Topics covered include acid–base balance, oxygen transport, renal disease, disorders of metabolism, diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, disorders of the hypothalamus and pituitary, abnormalities of thyroid function, disorders of the adrenal cortex and medulla, among others. Students analyze recent scientific studies in biochemistry to enhance their understanding.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand biochemical function tests used in diagnosing and monitoring response to therapy, prognosis, and screening.
  • Learn and discuss the role of clinical biochemistry in healthcare by linking clinical laboratory principles to patient care.
  • Critically analyze the clinical application of novel biomarkers in the context of relevant, current literature.
  • Critique the effectiveness and drawbacks of specific clinical laboratory test methodologies used to screen for, diagnose, and/or manage a given disease.
