Course Description

BSN 431 Nursing Care for Families and Children Applying provides a family-centered approach to excellence in nursing care, emphasizing health promotion, quality care, and positive health outcomes. Students learn about the nursing process, strategies, and theories formulated to promote and maintain the optimal functioning of children and their families. Topics covered in this course include family partnerships in nursing care, culturally responsive care, health assessment for children and families, emotional health supports, nursing care for children and youth with special needs, and applying theory to practice, among others. (Formerly BSN 431: Maternal and Child Health)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn and discuss the family-centered approach to excellent nursing care.
  • Critically analyze applicable nursing and non-nursing theories concerning health and development across lifespans and cultures.
  • Critically analyze recent research findings, particularly as they relate to nursing care of children and their families dealing with illness and special needs.
  • Develop proficiency in engaging with children and their families to improve health outcomes.
