Course Description

HIS 122 American Government explores the course of American governance over the decades to answer the question of whether the scope and power of government have progressed through the years. Through this course, students will learn the answer to this overarching question. In the process, students will inspect evidence on several dimensions of governance, specifically, legislative actions concerning public functions, public finance, administrative capacity, and legal rulings. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how the American government evolved over the generations since the mid-nineteenth century.   
  • Critically analyze the changing character of American institutions as critical parts of the history of the United States.
  • Critically analyze evidence on several dimensions of governance to reach an independent determination as to whether the American government has grown in terms of power and scope.
  • Understand the history of American public policy and its relationship to the constitutional and political structure of government at the federal, state, and local levels.
