Course Description

HIS 217 Western Civilization I examines Western civilization and its place within world history. Through this course, students learn about the linkages between Western civilization and world history, using the appropriate tools to see each subject in the context of the other, emphasizing influences and connections. Topics covered in this course include the history of Western civilization, the rise of the West between 1450 and 1850, and the West in the contemporary world. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the special virtues of Western civilization and the world history vision, and the linkages between them.
  • Critically analyze the issues and debates surrounding the place of Western civilization in world history.
  • Critically analyze key questions about the capacity of the West to adjust to new partners and competitors after an age of less complicated hegemony and globalization.
  • Understand the relationships of Western civilization with other civilizations.
