Course Description

PLG 100 Introduction to Paralegal Studies introduces students to the crucial elements of the paralegal profession, the roles of the paralegal in the law firm, and the American legal system. In studying the American legal system, students learn about civil litigation, criminal laws and procedures, the appeals process, and substantive legal matters, including tort, contracts, and property laws. Students also learn salient topics about working in a law office, including legal research, identifying the appropriate law, critical reading and writing, synthesizing the law, and applying the law. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the American legal system and the application and synthesis of laws. 

  • Develop skills required in the paralegal profession.

  • Understand how lawyers think.

  • Develop skills in legal reasoning and critical thinking and writing.
