PLG 115 Civil Procedure focuses on the civil litigation process through which parties can assert their legal rights by going to court. This course explores the rules and norms governing noncriminal cases in which the parties involved may be private individuals and government entities. Through this course, students learn the critical factors in the litigation process, such as the stages of litigation, determining the authority of court or courts in disposing of cases presented, and the applicable substantive rules of law. Students also learn the territorial limitations on the exercise of judicial power, the principles that determine the consequences of a court decision after a case, and alternatives to this highly formalized method of dispute resolution. This course focuses mainly on civil procedures in England and the United States.
