Course Description

PLG 126 Family Law introduces students to family law, including case law and salient statutory laws, to inform their future paralegal practice. Through this course, students learn the legal definition of family, constitutional limitations on the regulation of families, formal and informal marriage, same-sex unions and divorce, the parent-child relationship, parenting and custody, alimony, division of properties upon divorce, child support, dispute resolution mechanisms, and domestic violence. This course also covers legal ethics in the practice of family law. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and discuss legal concepts underpinning family law and family law practice.

  • Critically assess the challenges and debates surrounding the United States’ family law, including the ethical responsibilities of those practicing it.

  • Critically analyze and evaluate disputes arising between parties to a marriage or de facto relationship pertaining to property, children, and spousal maintenance issues.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in legal problem-solving to appropriately respond to complex statutory problems in family law.
