Course Description

PLG 215 Criminal Law examines the foundations and elements of substantive and procedural criminal law in the United States. This course explores the dimensions of crimes to inform paralegal practice, encompassing topics such as actus reus and mens rea, the nature of crime, general principles of criminal liability, criminal defenses, and inchoate offenses. Through this course, students also learn about the history of criminal law, common law formulations, offenses contrary to public morality, and the enactment and application of criminal laws. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand and discuss legal concepts underpinning criminal law and criminal law practice.

  • Critically assess the challenges and debates surrounding the United States’ criminal law, including the ethical responsibilities of those practicing in it.

  • Proficiently research and apply case law to legal analyses.

  • Critically analyze the impacts of history and philosophy on criminal law and practice.
