Using Computers in the Law Office
Name: Using Computers in the Law Office
Course Number: PLG 220
Credit(s): 3

Course Description

PLG 220 Using Computers in the Law Office explores the two-fold relationship between computers and the law, the knowledge of which is essential for paralegals. The first relationship explored in this course includes laws on computers and other information technologies and their regulation. The second relationship pertains to legal informatics, examined in this course as well, so that students learn how to use information technologies for the law. Through this course, students learn these relationships based on the rationale that paralegals interpret and apply legal norms that directly or indirectly address how the said technologies are designed and used. Only through knowledge of the basics of these technologies can paralegals become aware of the opportunities and risks involved in using them and of their impact on legal values. This course allows future paralegals to understand the opportunities for the use of these technologies in legal activities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand key laws and regulations on computers and other information technologies.

  • Understand legal informatics and how to use computers and information technologies for legal activities.

  • Critically analyze the opportunities and risks of computer use in legal work.
