Course Description

PLG 245 Legal Terminology introduces students to contemporary English Legal Terminology and the different Latinate word parts used in the polysyllabic vocabulary of the English law language. Through this course, students also learn strategies to generate useful translations of complex English words with Latin origins and the concepts they entail. Students also learn legal terminology for civil and criminal litigation, commercial law, torts and personal injury, contracts, and corporations. Comparisons are also made between legal terminology in England, the United States, and the European Union. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn the basic terminology used in the legal profession.

  • Understand contemporary English Legal Terminology in criminal and civil proceedings, tort law, commercial law, contracts, and companies.

  • Critically analyze issues in translations in the field of law.

  • Understand legal concepts and reasoning useful for paralegals.
